Start with the space you actually use

Measure your tables, chairs and walkways before choosing an umbrella size. Think about where customers sit, how staff move through the area and where the sun falls during your busiest service times.

A larger canopy may cover more space, but it also needs room to open and close. Check nearby walls, trees, signs and other umbrellas. The base or mounting arrangement also needs to fit the layout.

Whichever you prefer, ask about the actual model’s construction, operating mechanism and spare parts. A frame you can service may be a better long-term choice than one that must be replaced when a single component fails.

Look closely at the canopy fabric

The canopy is exposed to sun and weather every day. Ask which fabric is supplied, how it should be cleaned and what the fabric warranty covers. Solution-dyed acrylic and awning canvas are options worth discussing for commercial use.

Plan the base and weather routine together

A suitable base or mounting system is part of the umbrella selection, not an afterthought. The right arrangement depends on the umbrella model, location and exposure.

Ask for the operating guidance for your chosen model, including when to close it. Staff should know how to secure the umbrella and what to do when conditions change. Avoid assuming that “commercial” means an umbrella can stay open in every kind of weather.
