Outdoor Umbrella Buying Guide

Choose the right umbrella by starting with your space, then matching the frame, size, base and cover. If you are unsure, send us a photo or simple measurements and we can help narrow it down.

Start with the basics

Four decisions make choosing much easier

01

Measure the space

Measure the table, seating area or footprint you want shaded. Allow enough clearance for the canopy, centre pole and base so the umbrella can open and close comfortably.

02

Choose the look

Timber gives a warmer, traditional appearance. Aluminium gives a clean, modern look and is popular across cafés, restaurants and commercial outdoor dining.

03

Match the size

Choose the canopy size based on the area you actually need to shade — not just the overall size of the courtyard or venue.

04

Match the setup

The correct base and cover matter just as much as the umbrella. Use the compatibility guide below as a starting point.

Outdoor Umbrella Buying Guide

Choose the right umbrella for your space

The best umbrella depends on the area you need to shade, how exposed the site is, how often it will be used, and whether you prefer the look of timber or aluminium.

1. Start with the area you want to shade

Measure the space, table or seating area first. Allow clearance for the canopy, centre pole and base so the umbrella can open and close comfortably.

2. Timber or aluminium?

Timber umbrellas suit patios, gardens, pool areas, cafés and hospitality spaces where a warmer, more traditional look is preferred. Aluminium umbrellas have a clean modern appearance and work well for cafés, restaurants, courtyards and commercial outdoor dining.

3. Choose the right size

  • 7' Square Timber: compact patios, courtyards and smaller café settings.
  • 10' Hexagonal Timber: gardens, patios, cafés and restaurants.
  • 10' Square Timber: large patios, outdoor dining and hospitality venues.
  • 13' Octagonal Timber: large hospitality, poolside and resort-style spaces.
  • 2m Square Aluminium: tighter footprints, courtyards and footpath dining.
  • 3m Square Aluminium: larger cafés, restaurants, events and commercial areas.

4. Match the base and cover

Our 7' Square Timber, 10' Hexagonal Timber, 2m Aluminium and 3m Aluminium ranges use the 50mm base setup. The 10' Square Timber and 13' Octagonal Timber ranges use the 65mm base setup.

Use a Medium Easy Reach Cover for the 7' Square Timber, 10' Hexagonal Timber and 2m Aluminium. Use a Large Easy Reach Cover for the 10' Square Timber, 13' Octagonal Timber and 3m Aluminium.

5. Consider wind and exposure

Umbrellas should be closed and secured when unattended or during windy conditions. If your site is exposed, contact us before ordering so we can recommend the most suitable setup.

6. Think long term

A quality umbrella should be maintainable. D.Dawson & Co offers Australian-made replacement canopies, spare parts and repair support so worn components can be replaced instead of discarding the whole umbrella.
